Go Beyond Memorable, Become a Remarkable Networker

Networking, that vital business activity of building long-term, mutually beneficial relationships should be considered part of your marketing activities. It has something in common with advertising because it takes repeated exposures for someone to remember and become familiar with us. A previous article talked about becoming a memorable networker by being interested in the other person, by remembering them and by helping them remember you. Now that you are memorable, you want to move forward and become remarkable. Here are three ways to stand out in their mind.

Be Enthusiastic
There are few things more attractive than enthusiasm. It adds life to your features and makes other people want to share in that enthusiasm. They’ll remember you as the guy or gal who really enjoys life. Enthusiasm is contagious. Because you feel good when you’re with them, they’ll feel good about spending time with you. People remember those that really stand out and the positive association with your enthusiasm will be memorable. When people talk about you, they will comment on your enthusiasm. It is especially appreciated in an economy when so many people are down. Your energy will lift them up and that can be very remarkable.

Tell Stories
Don’t describe what you do in a dry, bullet-list format. Tell stories about the results you’ve created for your clients. Include the emotions they experienced and how you made them feel better or solved a problem for them. This goes back to people remembering how you made them feel. If you provide a story that makes them feel good, they’ll remember that they enjoyed hearing about your business instead of feeling bored. People love to tell their own stories, but they’ll pass along your remarkable stories, too. The more emotion you can put into a story, the more memorable it will be and the more likely it will be shared.

Be Remarkable
It’s not enough to simply be remembered when someone meets you for the second or third time. You want to be so memorable that you come to their mind regularly. You can help this with regular connections via phone, email or seeing them in person at networking events. You can also do this by being remarkable meaning you are so out of the ordinary in a positive way that they will talk about and think about you when you’re not reminding them. For business people this translates into referrals and a great reputation. To become remarkable, you’ll want to make them feel great, you’ll want to prove your value and trustworthiness to them and you’ll want to treat them as if they are remarkable to you.

If they remember you, they might think of you for referrals that fall into their lap. But if you become remarkable, they’ll talk about you and the experience they have when they are with you. Your reputation will build and you’ll find yourself with more business.

Top 5 Marketing Books

There is certainly no shortage of great marketing books out there, but I thought I would take a shot at putting together my personal top 5. There’s not really a science behind them, they are just the books that I have really enjoyed and learned a lot from.

1. The Purple Cow; by Seth Godin

By far, Seth Godin is my favorite author for many reasons. I love his straightforward and no-nonsense writing style, combined with ideas and concepts that simply make sense. Even though I have many books by Seth Godin, The Purple Cow had the most impact on me because it centers around making your business remarkable.

It really helps you look at your business from a branding standpoint. What makes you special? What makes you different? How are you going to be different – in a remarkable way – than the other companies out there that do the same stuff you do?

2. Made to Stick; by Chip & Dan Heath

Made to Stick really hit me in every area of my career as a professional speaker, marketer, and writer. Nothing is more vital to me than getting my messages and my ideas to resonate… to stick with my audience.

This book is a MUST for anyone who constantly needs to present concepts to others that they want them to remember. Authors, salespeople, presenters, speakers, marketers, copywriters will all benefit from this book.

They focus your ability to make your messages “stick” through 6 SUCCESS principles. SUCCESS is an acronym for Simple, Unexpected, Concrete, Credible, Emotional, and Story. Using several of these principles in your messaging will make it far more effective and memorable.

3. Selling the Invisible; by Harry Beckwith

Even though Selling the Invisible would be considered an “older” book, being published in 1997, it still is absolutely chock-full of golden marketing nuggets. In fact, nuggets is a good word because this is the first time I ever saw a book that was written with this short, blogging style – long before blogs were even popular.

You can jump anywhere in this book and find masterful marketing and selling ideas. He also writes in a no-nonsense style that I like, eliminating the “fluff and stuff” and getting right to the valuable points.

4. Six Pixels of Separation; by Mitch Joel

There are plenty of books that tell you how to do Social Media Marketing, but very few tell you why to do Social Media Marketing quite as well as Mitch Joel does. He presents the core concepts behind Social Media and share fascinating stories and case studies along the way.

Six Pixels of Separation helps you create an overall plan with your Social Media, so that you have a purpose for being out there, rather than simply talking to no one. He also offers insights into how you transition those online relationships into real-world relationships that produce results for your business.

5. The Brand Called You; by Peter Montoya

This book really helped me focus my attention on my most important product in every venture I pursue, and that is me. In The Brand Called You, Peter really helps you realize the importance and value to building your personal brand.

No matter what your business industry is, chances are, people are doing business with you because of you. One of the things I really like about the book is the fact that within each chapter, Peter offers a breakdown of the steps you can take, so there’s no room for missing out on what you do with the valuable information provided.

Starting an Online Business

When considering to start your business from home ask, yourself some questions

1. Is the online business I am considering stable?
2. What are my goals for this business?
3. Is there a support system in place?
4. Are there sufficient tools to get me started in my online business?

So lets take a deeper look at each of these questions to get you started in your online business. Question 1 has the business been around for at least a few years and does the product and the marketing seem sound? Are there people with sufficient backgrounds to make it last while you may not be able to get 100% guarantee of the future looking an the past will be a good indicator of how successful you can be at running your online business?

2. What are my goals for this online business? Use the smart system to establish your goals for your online business.
Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic Timely
*Who: Who is involved?
*What: What do I want to accomplish?
*Where: Identify a location.
*When: Establish a time frame.
*Which: Identify requirements and constraints.
*Why: Specific reasons, purpose or benefits of accomplishing the goal.

3. Is there a support system in place? Established an online business and a presence on the internet takes time. Make sure the online business your choosing has people in place to help you close sales, help with establishing your site and getting traffic to that site this will save you time. Without that guidance it can be very frustrating and you will have wasted a lot of time.

4. Are there sufficient tools to get me started in my online business?

Tools to establish your online business can save you frustration and time. You want to be able to use tracking for your ads so you will know what’s working and what’s not. Does the system also allow you to use email ads an autoresponder, splash pages, squeeze pages viral advertising, video marketing.

Lets explore these a little closer.

1 Email ads there should be sufficient written material to mail to your prospects.

2. Autoresponder most people need to see your message at least 5 times before they take action. Does the system your using give you marketing material to follow up with your prospects with a call to action

3. Splash pages/squeeze pages a splash page is basically a fast loading page with a call to action ie. sign up to my mailing list and the squeeze page takes your prospect to the autoresponder. You use a well designed Splash page with some of the benefits of your online business outlined you don’t want to expose people with a long marketing massage a first, just enough to get them to sign up to your list. Give people a reason to join you remember this people tune in to their favorite radio station WIFM.

Viral advertising Just like the cold it’s a message or video that gets passed on from person to person Viral advertising can bring enormous volumes of traffic to a website or blog, and if only one percent of tens of thousands of hits represent really interested customers, even that could effect business remarkably, especially if the virus continues to spread.

5. Video marketing Does your online business use videos video marketing service is an exciting and powerful tool to help convert your website’s visitors into customer. This involves thinking outside of the traditional video box and finding new and innovative ways to attract and retain your audience.

With the right content, online video will boost the number of qualified leads and new sales. The interactive element of video marketing allows your business to fully engage users and ultimately lead to more sales and greater ROI.
